THE first Sydenham Arts Festival takes place over the next two weeks.
From today (July 3) until July 12 there will be performances including drama, dance, music, poetry and film screenings, with many events free.
More than 40 events will take place in galleries, schools, shops, churches, community centres, libraries, cafes and parks in the Sydenham area.
Sydenham High Street will be the venue for a street party tomorrow (July 4) which features an urban outdoor beach, street dancers, a barbershop quartet, and buskers.
If you fancy trying a bit of dancing there will be a flamenco workshop on Sunday (July 5) which will finish with a short performance by members of Viva Flamenco.
And on July 10 visitors will have the chance to vote on which show they would like to see performed in Sydenham Wells Park as part of London Bubble’s Mystery Show.
Picnic in the park on July 12 will see dance, theatre, live music performances, poetry and visual arts.
Festival organiser Jonathan Kaufman said “Sydenham was ready for something new and exciting, and we wanted to create a festival which would prove to the rest of London that Sydenham is more than just another London suburb.
“It's a chance for all local people to connect and share the arts.”
