Judging by the comments we see on social media when there are delays, lots of people can be quite creative with language when they’re on a station platform. Most of it you wouldn’t want to print.

But one woman is creating poetry so impressive that she’s been named Greenwich station’s poet-in-residence and her work is now going on display at a gallery.

Nancy Hynes, who has an MA from Goldsmiths, arrived on the platform with her pad and pen earlier this year to draw inspiration from station life. On seeing her work Southeastern’s Area Manager, Sonia Maulson, made her stay official.

Since them, one of Nancy’s poems has adorned a station billboard every month.

Now her full resident-repertoire is appearing in a free exhibition at the Made in Greenwich Gallery, in Creek Road, Greenwich.

Greenwich Station Revisited in Words and Images is open until Thursday, September 24, and also features paintings by four other local artists: Gillian Burrows, John Govett, Penney Matheson and David Weekes.

Nancy said: “Sometimes people are too busy to take it all in. But for me, the incredible diversity of people passing through is inspiring. There are different moods and rhythms throughout the day. Seeing them stop to read my poems is a good feeling.”

Nancy will perform a special reading at 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 22. Tickets for ‘“The Sting of Speed and the Solace of Motion”: Railway poems from Greenwich and beyond’ cost £7 and include refreshments.
