On top of a castle, at your local football ground, beneath an 19th century tea clipper - these days you can even get married down the pub.
We take a look at 11 weird and wonderful venues for a civil wedding or civil partnership in Lewisham and Greenwich:
1. The Cutty Sark and Severndroog Castle in Shooter's Hill are the latest places bidding to become the venue of choice for budding brides and grooms in south-east London.
Both landmarks have applied for licences - not yet approved - to hold civil partnerships and marriages.
The Severndroog folly will have enough space for small ceremonies in the Lady James Room beneath its magnificent chandelier, with time for snaps on top of the castle.
2. If you fancy having your wedding photos next to a stuffed walrus and a merman you can get married at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, that was the choice of Frederick Horniman's great great grandaughter Hilary, who held her service at the museum's conservatory last year while wearing her great grandmother's necklace.
Amanda Dilnot, Horniman consultant for Suzanne James caterers, helps organise up to 40 weddings a year at the museum, which has three designated spaces for weddings, including the bandstand for small groups and the much larger conservatory.
She said: "It allows an awful lot of flexibility because it's effectively a blank slate.
"We do everything to make it possible.
"Because we do it all, it's almost like having an event planner from the get go."

3. If you prefer football to fossils, both Millwall and Charlton Athletic's doors are open.
The Den saw its first wedding last year, with 70 guests at the ceremony of Lions fans Billy and Sammy Wiltshire - whose invites were sent out on matchday tickets - for photos on the pitch and a slap up pie and mash meal with special guest Zampa the Lion.
4. Wetherspoons only offers a limited number of wedding venues nationally, but if you do need some Dutch courage, riverside boozer the Trafalgar Tavern will host your bash - although there were several complaints of big days being ruined last year by scaffolding around the pub.
5. Greenwich writers Dale Shaw, 43, and wife-to-be Daisy Buchanan, 29, who has just penned a book on online dating, will be getting wed at the Greenwich Yacht Club, no doubt hoping drunken guests won't take an unexpected dip in the river.
The pair were inspired after a friend's ceremony at the same spot, organising it comparatively quickly and cheaply compared to other places. Mr Shaw, a comedy writer from Welland Street, explained: "We live in Greenwich and we wanted somewhere local, mainly due to laziness but also out of loyalty to the area."
He said: "A lot of people get married in Greenwich and that's a problem because it's pushed the prices up to a large degree."
Mr Shaw went on: "We really liked the location - the people were nice and it seemed to be the perfect size. It's right on the river - if you like boatyards then you're in luck."
6. For a real touch of class, you can get a civil wedding at some very galmorous locations in Lewisham and Greenwich.
How about the Manor House in Lee, Charlton House, or, for added glamour, the Old Royal Naval College or Eltham Palace (pictured).
It all sounds a lot more interesting than a trip down the registry office.
