1 – They still know how to keep a big crowd happy

Having entered the stage to hand out ice creams to those lucky enough to be right at the very front, Damon Albarn had the crowd in his pocket from the word go.

Several times he was able to stop singing and let the fans continue with the lyrics.

That in itself is testament to the popularity of the band and their back catalogue which stretches back a quarter of a century.

2 – Parklife is arguably their best work

No, I don’t just mean the single, although that of course remains a classic in its own right and the appearance of Phil Daniels was a huge plus.

I’m talking about the 1994 album whose release really moved Blur to the A-List of the emerging Britpop scene.

Just over 20 years on the likes of Girls & Boys, This Is A Low, Bad Head and To The End remain great songs in their own right.

Seven tunes from Parklife were played at Hyde Park and the crowd loved every one of them.

3 – There are still some decent tunes from The Great Escape album

The follow up to Parklife in 1995 was the release of The Great Escape, although this effort is widely viewed as pale by comparison and not exactly their finest.

But last night Stereotypes went down well, while He Thought of Cars to me is an under-rated song and got a welcome public airing.

Might be worth remembering the lyrics though next time Damon!

4 – The two-hour set was so good time flew by

Songs from all of Blur’s eight albums were played to the Hyde Park crowd, starting with Go Out from this year’s Magic Whip release.

Having such a vast back catalogue to dip into it is hardly surprising Blur were able to play 23 songs in total.

The set lasted two hours in total but nobody really noticed the time until sadly Damon announced the last song was coming up next.

5 – The Universal is a great tune to end on

Easily the best single from The Great Escape, the band sent us all home happy by playing The Universal to cap a brilliant evening of entertainment.

Blur remain a great act to see live and this song is one of their finest so what better way to just let them go …
