A Greenwich festival which sees world class dancers sharing the spotlight with local talent will return ‘bigger than ever’ next month.

Greenwich Dances, organised by Greenwich Dance and part of the council’s Royal Greenwich Festivals, will see top performers and young and amateur dancers putting on shows and giving audiences a chance to get involved over a two-week programme across the borough from June 17 to 30.

Moving Woolwich opens the festival in General Gordon Square on Friday, June 17, with an afternoon of performances and the chance for the audience to get involved.

Among the highlights are Royal Museums Greenwich choreographer-in-residence Bethan Peters’ project We May Be Some Time (June 26) which brings the National Maritime Musuem to life using a cast of locally-recruited dancers.

Acclaimed contemporary dance artist Francesco Scavetta spent six days at Greenwich Dance last month hosting workshops and will return for Greenwich Dances at The Borough Hall on June 22 with his show Surprised Body Project, which has been performed in 23 countries and in London will feature three British dancers chosen after extensive auditions in Greenwich.

Many of the events are free, while some of the paid shows will have a limited number of tickets available for £1 for people living in the Greenwich Borough who have not seen a Greenwich Dance performance before.

Greenwich Dance’s artistic director Kat Bridge said: “Whether you've never seen a dance event before - or you’re a dance fan looking for the very best in world-class performance - we have something for everyone at this year's Greenwich Dances festival. We're so excited to be welcoming such a talented roster of artists to Greenwich this year.

“Once again many of our events are completely free, and for our events at The Borough Hall, we’re able to offer a limited number of £1 tickets for local residents – so if you’ve never experienced dance before, you can give it a go without having to break the bank. We hope you can join us for the biggest Greenwich Dances festival yet.”
