Music takes centre stage at a mini-festival in Sydenham this Spring.

Organised by Sydenham Arts from April 9 to 17, it precedes the main Summer Festival in July and includes 20 events.

A taster event called The Colour of Sound kicks things off on February 28. It will see musician Fiona Bryan team up with Spectrum Ensemble London to play pieces from composers such as Mozart, Ravel and Rachmaninoff re-arranged for an unusual combination of wind instruments. She will then create artworks inspired by the sounds and take part in a Q&A about the creative process.

Between April 9 and 17, events include a performance by singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams, whose album Hypoxia was a response to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath won acclaim from the likes of The Guardian.

Sounds and Sweet Airs: A Shakespearean Treasury will explore interpretations of Shakespeare’s texts by 19th and 20th century composers while younger audiences can enjoy Painting Music Workshops, Madame Butterfly and Monsieur Butterfly.

Other highlights will include the London Joy Singers gospel choir in Mayow Park and a screening of last year’s Oscar winner Birdman.
