A Beckenham duo fell at the first hurdle and failed to impress the judges on The Voice UK, this weekend.

Best friends Michael Gazzard, 32, and Anthony Goldsbrough, 33, known as The Rise, appeared on the BBC talent show on Saturday where they performed NSYNC’s Pop.

But despite a warm reaction from the audience the pair were left disappointed when judges Tom Jones, will.i.am, Rita Ora and Ricky Wilson failed to spin their seats around.

The twosome, who have been performing together for more than a decade and sang backing vocals for Bonnie Tyler at Eurovision in 2013, told News Shopper how it felt to audition.

Freelance tour manager Mr Goldsbrough, of Wickham Road said: “It’s a great platform for artists and out of all the talent shows we thought The Voice might be good for us.

“We were nervous. When you do your own gigs, even though you are getting judged by the crowd, you know it almost doesn’t matter too much.

“But with The Voice, you know the judges are either going to turn around or not turn around.”

Mr Gazzard, of Rectory Road, who works part-time in a bakery when the band are not performing, said: “It was emotionally draining definitely.

“It was more nerve wracking than Eurovision.”

The Rise formed after Mr Goldsbrough placed an advertisement in a newspaper looking for a guitarist, 11 years ago.

Mr Gazzard added: “Anthony was in a band, who were looking for a guitarist, and I was the only one to turn up.

“We got on so well that within a week, we broke away from the others and started writing our own material.”

The duo have performed backing vocals for a whole host of famous faces including Peter Andre, Lee Ryan and Dane Bowers.

They even gigged with Jedward on Channel 4’s final live Big Brother show as part of a distraction task for contestants.

Mr Goldsbrough said: "We performed with Jedward and a full band.

"I don’t know how they do it because they don’t have any sugar but I felt sick from the amount of energy they were giving out!”

Despite failing to make it through to the next round of The Voice, the boys remain undeterred and plan to release their second single, Lucky One, next month and their debut album later this year.
