Lucky children from Launcelot Primary, Bromley to sing with The Drifters

Pupils from Launcelot Primary in Bromley were fortunate enough to be picked from surrounding schools to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime workshop with the American group in preparation for their big moment.

The band of around 20 youngsters will be joining the world-famous musicians to sing two of their most recognisable numbers, Saturday Night at the Movies and Stand by Me at The Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

On Wednesday February 1 The Drifters practiced with their new mini sidekicks at the school in Launcelot Road.

Michael Williams, who joined the group around seven years ago, said: “We sent over the song to the school about a month in advance and gave them a chance to get used to it and feel it out.

“We had a ball at the school.

“The kids were very bright and bubbly and not shy at all.

“A lot of their parents were big Drifters fans so they knew all the songs and they were really interested in us.

“They asked lots of questions about how many singles we’d sold and about where the other guys were at.

“There were definitely some budding journalists there.”

The students, between six and ten-years-old, were thrilled to become part of the show.

Michael added: “The excitement from the kids really touched us.

“I’m really looking forward to performing with them.”

The group, now in their 59th year, began singing with youngsters in America.

Michael said: “We started performing with schools in the States about five years ago because we wanted to give back to the community around the world and what better way than to work with schools?

“It’s so exciting for the kids.”

The singer, who is also embarking on a solo career, joined the band after being spotted by founding member George Treadwell’s daughter Tina during one of his performances.

He said: “I was in a nightclub in New York doing a solo show when Tina saw me.

“She asked me to audition to be in The Drifters and of course you don’t get asked questions like that every day.

“I was surprised and honoured.

“The first couple of years were pretty tough – I had some big shoes to fill.

“But now I’m getting used to it.”

Formed in 1953, a constant succession of regular line-up changes characterised The Drifters name.

To date they have over 114 million album sales and 214 million singles sales under their belt, enjoying massive success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Their upcoming show will feature at The Churchill for one night only and includes all of the classic songs, as well as newer material.

“It’s all going to be there – Under the Boardwalk, Kissin’ in the Back Row, everything.” Michael continued.

“It’s a fantastic show.”

They will be performing on Sunday February 26 at 7.30pm and tickets are £25.
