Tuff the Duo - Tuff the Band's singer and guitarist's stripped down sideline - can't resist an acoustic classic. The evidence comes from their latest release, The That's Entertainment EP, which delivers failsafe and feel-good covers, such as That's Entertainment and Mrs Robinson, in a harmonious and catchier-than-a-cold style.

Instead of opting for alternative takes on these legendary numbers, the duo opt for a rock-free version of The Rolling Stones' Paint It Black and soften the usually melancholic Tears for Fears/Gary Jules' Mad World with a clean-cut vocal and swap the foreboding synths for sweeter guitar work.

Removing the grit makes for smoother sound with popular appeal.

While this all makes for lovely listening, it would be great to hear some of the duo or band's original material. Featuring something of their own making would fit better with a reputation for impromptu jamming - musicians, including Drew Babyshambles McConnell have joined Tuff on stage in the past.

It's no wonder the group attracted industry attention in their early days. This EP showcases some excellent musicianship - perfect intonation and tone from singer Mike Kelson, hearty and crisp guitar playing from Richard Foskett, a team which blends perfectly for tuneful and precise harmonies. Qualities which could and should be explored on an LP.

Live on Oct 11, Surrey Cricketers, West Street, Croydon. 9pm until midnight. Free.

Oct 17, The Swan, High Street, West Wickham. 9pm. Free.
