WE ALL know nachos are just glorified Doritos, but it is disconcerting to see restaurant staff nip to the shops, buy a bag and empty it into a box right before your eyes.

That’s what happened when I went along to Chicago’s Pizza in Brownhill Road, Catford.

Chicago’s looks like a million other low-budget pizza houses. The tiles, industrial grey machinery and cheap posters bearing images of kebabs strike a depressing chord.

But it is fairly cheap, clean, does halal meat and you can order online. Plus, you can see right into the kitchen, which emerged to not be a positive after all.

My Mexican Nachos and a medium Ulti Meat Plus pizza and a coke – eyes bigger than my belly – came to a pleasingly-low £9.05, including a cheeky 50p for paying by card.

Sitting patiently at the shabby table, I noticed a member of staff nip out and come back a few minutes later with a bag of Doritos and watched as another chap opened the bag and chucked on the extras before jamming it in the microwave.

This is probably happens in restaurants all over, but being so blatant was off-putting.

The wait was mercifully short and, when my food arrived, I must admit it was ok. The nachos were more or less what I was expecting – messy as always, a bit soggy, but generally good.

The pizza – a deep pan with pepperoni, salami, bacon, meatball and spicy beef – was big, hot, greasy and tasty. I could have done with a napkin, though.
