Taste the Mediterranean on your doorstep at Alaturka, Blackheath
Until last night I was adamant the best tasting calamari is found in quaint restaurants on Mediterranean beaches.
Fried squid rings are a dish which just say ‘holiday’ to me.
But on Wednesday evening (July 11) I discovered my favourite seaside food is actually cooked best in Blackheath – who’d have known?
Along with beautifully battered, sensational squid, a multitude of home cooked Cypriot masterpieces awaits you at Alaturka.
We went along to try some of the diner’s signature dishes last Wednesday and I’ve never been welcomed with a bigger feast in my life.
My friend and I were treated to Alaturka’s tasting menu for two – I challenge anyone to find this much gloriously authentic Mediterranean food for such amazing value for money.
For just £32, you can fill your boots with top notch, fresh and vibrant dishes.
The spread kicks off with an array of cold starters including homemade hummus, cacik (yoghurt, cucumber and mint dip) and taramasalata with pita bread.
Halloumi cheese, marinated beans in a rich tomato sauce and yet another bean dish with olive oil and parsley top off the first round of starters.
These are followed by that incredible calamari, lamb meatballs, spicy Turkish sausage and marinated vine leaves filled with rice and herbs.
Every mouth-watering bite was delicious.
We greedily gobbled as much as we could of the luxurious, creamy dips and barely spoke to each other apart from to groan in mutual approval.
One tip I will give you though – be sparing with the pita bread.
It fills you up before you know it.
Our main course, a stunning mixed kebab featuring juicy chicken, lamb chops, spicy seftali kebab and lamb shish, is a meat-eater’s dream come true.
All that gorgeously spiced meat sits on a bed of fluffy rice and salad (which we couldn’t touch because our tummies were so stuffed).
You seriously don’t need to step on a plane to land in the Mediterranean.
Just hop in your car and come to Shooters Hill Road.
I can almost taste the lovely lamb and chicken now – literally.
We had so much food that the wonderful owner gave us a doggy bag to take the rest home and I’m just about to reheat it for lunch.
So long - I’m off to the Med again, back in 15 minutes.
