Robots, aliens and wild sound effects are landing on a stage in Bromley as cult show Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy explodes into town.

The legendary radio and TV cast will be reunited when the classic series is brought to life at The Churchill Theatre.

Andrew Sachs, best known as Manuel from Fawlty Towers, will also be performing exclusively at The Churchill as the Voice of the Book between Thursday June 28 and Saturday June 30.

Simon Jones, who has played lead character Arthur Dent since Douglas Adams created him in the 1970s, told News Shopper about touring with the show.

He said: “We are doing a radio recording at every show which will be available for download for 48 hours afterwards.

“We want the audience to join in and help, which they do with great enthusiasm.

“They scream in terror and sing like Nordic gods.

“And we teach them how to make a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.

“There’s plenty to look at – the second half gets wild and crazy.”

Diehard fans up and down the country have been responding extremely well to the show.

Simon added: “It seems to be a huge hit and people are loving it.

“People are rushing out to buy tickets.

“It has a certain nostalgia factor and it’s sort of timeless.

“We don’t think we’ve changed at all – we sound the same and I think that’s what people like about it.”

The ground-breaking performance features highlights from the entire Hitchhiker’s saga, all in surround sound.

Simon added: “We went from one radio programme to books which sold all over the world – it touched a nerve with people.

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is actually like the iPad.

“Douglas Adams predicted it.

“He would have loved all the stuff going on now with personal computers.”

Of all the hilarious lines in the saga, including one about a translating fish which lives in your ear and causes God to disappear in a puff of logic, Simon found it quite tricky to choose a favourite.

He said: “’I think it’s Thursday, it must be Thursday – I could never get the hang of Thursdays’.

“That’s my favourite.

“Playing Arthur Dent is like putting on a cuddly old dressing gown, we are like old friends.”

Originally performing the beloved show on the radio, the characters felt comfortable making up costumes and aliens over the airwaves.

Simon added: “Well no-one knew what I was wearing on the radio.

“When we did the TV show it had to be shown and we were saddled with these things.

“There’s something funny about Arthur Dent in another galaxy in his dressing gown.”

From radio, to television, film and books, the story has been played out in every possible format.

“Everyone has their favourite.” Simon continued.

“A few people say this is the best yet – but I’m not going to stick my neck out and say that.

“It’s nice to have a direct relationship with the audience and to actually see the jokes working.”

Performances start at 7.45pm and tickets cost between £22.50 and £25.
