Bromley magistrates call time on The Beech Tree, St Mary Cray after anti-social behaviour complaints

The Beech Tree pub has closed after Bromley magistrates agreed with council decision The Beech Tree pub has closed after Bromley magistrates agreed with council decision

A BOOZER has closed after complaints about loud music and intimidating and anti-social behaviour led its alcohol licence to be taken away.

Bessim Bessim had decided to challenge Bromley Council’s decision to revoke his licence for The Beech Tree at Bromley Magistrates’ Court.

But after three days of evidence about the pub, in Wellington Road, St Mary Cray, the magistrates agreed with the council’s licensing sub-committee.

Licensing sub-committee chairman Councillor Nicholas Bennett said: "Bromley Council will always take firm action to deal with breaches of the licensing laws.

“In this instance the landlord had repeatedly refused to take advice from the council, the pub landlords and the police about the noise coming from his pub and the general nuisance he was causing.

“We are delighted that the magistrates have found that the decision to remove his licence was lawful and reasonable given his behaviour.

“We look forward to the landlords reopening the pub with a new licensee once the present tenant has left."

During the pub licence review last December the committee heard the council’s public health nuisance team had received a series of complaints about loud music and antisocial behaviour by drinkers in the pub and the landlord.

These complaints dated back to March last year.

The pub had been issued with a noise abatement notice last year and had speakers, amplifiers and its television seized last August after it breached the notice.

More equipment was seized by council officers on May 25 after more complaints of noise.

Good call! Now could someone please do something about Bexleyheath? Friday and Saturday nights are made hell for local residents by the influx of various drunken, feral, selfish and noisy yobs of both sexes getting plastered in the excessive number of bars and 'clubs' infesting this area. Chucking out time results in packs of foul-mouthed howling idiots up to and including half one in the morning. Pass the ear-plugs and valium, please, seeing as police are noticeable by their absence and the powers that be can't give a toss about it, seeing as they clearly don't live here.

I wonder what happened - Bexley used to be a stand out leader in having zero tolerance to pubs with problems - they were closing them down left right and centre, and the pubs and off-licenses were really taking notice! Have they gone lenient again for some reason?

The Beech Tree was a lovely pub. A pub where you could take your whole family for the day and know you and them would be safe. How can one crazy lady be happy with herself knowing this is the damage she caused to the landlords and their family. absolutely disgusting. So one lady wants to make up a whole load of lies and destroy a family in peices and some how manages to succeed. Its a shame to see this pub has closed down. I cant see the new owners EVER getting this pub back to how it use to be. I say no more and wish the best of luck to the landlords and may they finally get on with their lives now!

Chrisbitz, you're reading my mind. The situation has become so horrible of late that I am going to do my best to address this downward spiral my purpose in life until something's done. We all know that nostalgia ain't what it used to be, but when my wife moved here over twenty-five years ago, she tells me that Bexleyheath may not have been all orchards, meadows and good Samaritans, but it certainly wasn't showing any sign of turning into an ASBO town full of litter and drunks, but of late it's been showing disturbing symptoms of deteriorating into just that. If you don't try and just give up and put up with it, nothing will ever get done and we're going to end up being the focus of charming TV programmes like 'Boozed up Britain.' And digressing slightly for a minute, isn't it charming to see squads of CPOs and Police in the town square when school's out, just to separate aggressive factions of various youths and to keep order in bus queues? Orchards, fields, good manners, mutual respect and Samaritans? And perhaps a bit of peace at night? Dream on; I don't recommend anyone holds their breath but you never know - one can but live in hope.

The beech tree is a great pub and I have been going there for a few years now and I have never seen any trouble at all, the landlords were the nicest people you could meet and were always friendly,
All this is just journo rubbish not writing the whole story about what has happened and only picking bits out...

The new owners will never get the pub back to how it used to be as i know i will not be going back in there when the new owners take over

Have I missed something oldman? I haven't written anything about it - I am just asking, "Who is the crazy lady?"

The article above is written by Robert Fisk who as far as I know is a fella - so it can't be him who's slagging people off and the article makes no mention of a woman.

If you know the full story then please enlighten the rest of us. Who exactly has slagged off who?

Hopefully new landlords get into the pub and turn it into a nice place. The last Landlord was more into annoying his neighbours than running a good pub and thats why it closed down. It didnt close down because of one crazy lady. Look at the court statements http://cds.bromley.g

Thanks for that link it made for hysterical reading.

A quote direct from it "The Sub-Committee also took the unusual step of viewing, at Mr Bessim’s request CCTV footage which he alleged would show inappropriate remarks made by Sergeant Stuart Baker of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, responding to a call to police. The Sub-Committee were not able to hear the nature of the words uttered by the police officer because it was overshadowed by the music being played at the time. The Sub-Committee also noted that the incident took place before the official opening time, when it was not open to the public and that the doors were wide open and music could be clearly heard from inside the premises. The CCTV footage also showed Mr Bessim’s car parked some distance away from the curb, causing obstruction to oncoming traffic."

So not only did he ask the council to look at his cttv footage but it also showed him playing loud music before his legal opening time !!

You couldnt make it up could you ?

That's the whole point 'its meeee', I think it comes under respecting ones neighbours.
Even more so when running a public house in a residential area.

Good on yer, Ron. I totally agree. Not a lot more from me for a while, I'm out of the country for a couple of months, but if you're going to contribute more, I'll monitor your stuff, even though I'll be the other side of the world. Let's keep this going.

"its meeee" that was only one small part of a long document of events.

Basically it shows the landlord isnt exactly the brightest button if he insists the cctv is viewed when it implicates him in several offences.

A licence gives permission to sell alcohol between certain hours, if you are open at other hours you are breaking the conditions of the licence, nothing to do with the music in this particular instance.

HIS cctv showed HIS car was parked causing an obstruction thus an offence has been committed, therefore not legal.

Lets also not forget the various police reports on the noise and other activities they witnessed.

Dont believe everything you read, you say ?
So i take it thats all the comments saying the pub did no wrong we dont believe

Overall I am very sad about the situation, I moved in up the road to the pub and saw it as a benefit to the area. It was only the last 2 years when Mr Bessim changed and things went bad. I feel sorry for the guy and his family but he only has himself to blame. People may blame the old lady but she is not the one getting arrested, beaten up and upsetting the good people of the street. Its just a shame things went the way they did as it seems to have sent him over the edge.
