Racy Russian star-in-the-making talks about supporting Steps at The O2, Greenwich
2:25pm Friday 20th April 2012 in Freetime latest news By Nikki Jarvis
A sexy Russian singer has told Vibe supporting Steps is like a “fairytale” despite having to reign in her raunchy act.
Shockolady landed a dream gig opening for the pop superstars on their comeback arena tour which comes a decade after the band split.
I went along to The O2, Greenwich to watch this up-and-coming performer warm up the crowd on Thursday night.
Although this was a sell-out event, only around a quarter of ticket-holders turned up in time to see Shockolady’s set, which included her catchy new single I Like it Like That featuring UK rapper Mr Smith.
And they really missed out because this girl can sing – and her colourful flashing boots were a spectacle to behold all on their own.
I ran backstage to catch up with the rocking songstress straight after her performance.
Obviously buzzing with adrenaline, Shockolady, aka Alla, looked incredible close-up in a tiny, glittering, gold and black number.
Instantly it was obvious this outgoing chick’s glowing personality is going to help her achieve her global, stadium-sized career goals.
Beaming, she told me about getting the call for Steps when she was supporting T. Rex in Germany.
She said: “I could not believe it at first.
“They were massive - I heard all the arenas had sold out.
“It’s great when the place is full of people.
“In the smaller towns there were about 8,000 people but they were all standing when I came on – it was love at first sight.”
Alla drummed up quite the UK following at the end of 2010 when she supported Jedward on tour and performed at the Indigo2, the smaller venue within The O2.
As die-hard fans of the Irish twins followed them around the country, they came to adore Alla as well.
She added: “Near the end of the tour they would be shouting ‘Shocko, Shocko' before I even got on stage – it was such a warm feeling.
“They were mostly kids and really crazy, there’s no other word to describe them.
“They gave me a reindeer costume and I put it on for my last song – such a memory.
“I had this feeling of coming back to this building and being so happy that just one year passed and I’m in the big arena.
“I had my 15 minutes.
“Next year I want to be in stadiums not arenas – hopefully Wembley next year.”
Chatting to this charming, cute star-in-the-making, it’s hard to imagine her as a dominatrix but she tells me her ideal show would involve much sexier content.
Saying that, her racy twist on Elton John’s Bennie and the Jets really worked.
“I’m holding back.” She continued.
“I want much sexier and extravagant costumes and I want to change the way I move on stage but there are lots of kids and parents here.”
And Claire Richards from Steps has offered some kind words of advice.
Alla said: “I met Claire in the kitchen and she saw I was worried.
“She said ‘I used to be a support act and I know there are lots of restrictions’.
“I really like her.”
Feeling nothing but warmth towards this Russian glamour puss I rushed back to my dizzyingly high seat to relive my youth as Steps took to the stage.
And Claire Richards, you rock - what an incredible voice.
