Penge Festival back for 40th year
8:46am Wednesday 18th April 2012 in Freetime latest news By Robert Fisk
A FESTIVAL which has been bringing a community together for decades is back for its 40th year.
Founded in 1972 as a way of promoting and developing existing community relations in the town, the Penge Festival has grown over the years with events now spread throughout three weeks.
As a way of celebrating the anniversary Penge Partners, the volunteer group which organises the event, will be handing out a free commemorative programme.
The organisers hope people will keep this as a souvenir to mark the momentous year in the history of the festival.
Penge Festival committee member, and former chairwoman, Kathy Bance says she hopes the festival will go on for years into the future.
She added: “The committee is getting stronger and more experienced and attracting different people in.
“There is such a lot of community spirit in Penge and the idea of the festival is to bring everybody together, that’s the aim.
“I think the fact that we have so much art in the festival and there is poetry and history talks and walks.
“We have reached out and it is all about the history of Penge and the people of Penge.”
Every year the festival raises a significant amount of money for two charities chosen by the organising committee.
And this year is no exception with the hope that the 40th anniversary will draw even bigger crowds than normal to help support Help for Heroes and church project Living Well.
Living Well is being run at Holy Trinity Church, Lennard Road, Penge, to help drug addicts, alcoholics, the homeless and the mentally ill to improve their quality of life.
