An inspirational band has composed a collection of songs about women and unspoken relationships to celebrate feminine influence on music.

To tie in with International Women’s Day on March 8 Abimaro & The Free will perform their five original tunes at a special show called The House My Sister Drew at The Albany Theatre, Deptford this Friday (March 2).

The group was commissioned by the Performing Right Society’s (PRS) Women Make Music initiative to write and perform the show after it discovered out of all artists signed to the UK’s music membership organisation, only 14 per cent of them are women.

Lead singer Abimaro Gunnell, from Hither Green, said: “We are really excited.

"The songs are about stuff you never hear about in music.

“You hear about the relationships women have with guys but not about the relationships they have with their mum, daughter, brother or friends.

“Our songs are about my family, my husband, my sister, my friend and one is about my unborn child.

“It’s really been inspiring.”

Joining Abimaro in the “soul-folk” band are Alex Montaque, 21, (keys and vocal) and James Beatt, 26 (bass guitar and vocal).

The group has been together for around four years and draw inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell.

Abimaro, 24, added: “It’s really important that more women are engaging in music.

“We need both choices – to be able to hear from both perspectives because it gives you a balanced view of life.

“To women, I’d say listen to our songs for a refreshing story that represents something they are familiar with but that’s never spoken about through music.”

Following their show at The Albany, Abimaro & The Free are setting out on a tour of independent cafes across East London in April to promote their new single Ginger Tea.

“We hope to keep making music and doing it full-time.” Abimaro said.

“We want to write songs that touch people’s hearts.

“Artists that inspire us have poetic lyrical content that’s sincere and authentic.”

The House My Sister Drew takes place at The Albany in Douglas Way, Deptford from 7.30 to 10pm.

Tickets are £6 in advance available from www.thealbany.org.uk or £8 on the door.
