Beckenham’s Jane Beedle was the named the first Star Baker as the Great British Bake Off returned to our screens last night.

The seventh series in the tent got under way with drizzle cakes, jaffas and mirrored Genoese sponges making up the three rounds.

Mum-of-two Jane, who is a garden designer by trade, fought off stiff competition from laid-back banker Selasi to take the accolade in the first week.

She impressed judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry with her lemon and poppy seed drizzle, despite having to stop and remake it after forgetting to add in her ground almonds.

She clinched the victory with her showstopper – a chocolate and orange ganache cake with a mirror glaze.

South London’s other hopefuls – Benjamina and Rav – got off to solid starts too.

Benjamina’s lemon and pistachio drizzle in the signature bake first round was praised for its great flavour and texture whole her jaffa cakes tasted good despite not being totally picture perfect.

The economics graduate was reduced to tears, however, in the final round as her glaze refused to come together in the mixer. But her concern was misplaced as the judges love the shine on the glaze and her sponge cakes.

Rav, from Erith, flew under the radar a bit in episode one. His yuzu drizzle got tepid reviews while his mocha showstopper was criticised for being too dry.

Church minister Lee Banfield, 67, was the first to leave the tent after a disappointing three rounds. Preparing an orange and lemon drizzle in the first, his sponge turned to clumps while he was second from bottom in the technical challenge with uneven jaffa cakes with chocolate splodged over the top.
