Marvel’s blockbuster Captain America: Civil War is currently dominating at the box office and was made with a budget of many millions – but what would it look like if it was done of the cheap?
Surprisingly good, it turns out. A group of old school friends from Orpington have recreated the film’s trailer using homemade costumes and lashings of ingenuity.
Their Captain America: Civil War trailer – Budget Videos scored in excess of half a million views on Youtube in less than three days over the weekend.
One of the filmmakers, Matthew Potter told us: “It was a complete team effort and everyone is really excited for it.
“It has blown us all way.”
The friends all studied together at Ravensbourne College in Chislehurst and all have a background broadly in media production and pooled their talents to make the fun two-and-a-half minute clip which features plenty of colourful cardboard, joke shop wigs and a trampoline.
Matthew said: “The fun bit is looking at the shot and thinking ‘how are we going to do that?’”
He added: “We all went to uni together and we never see each other anymore because we all work five days a week so it is a good idea for a meet up.”
The team, who previously shot their own budget version of Star Wars The Force Awakens in December, took 15 days to shoot the latest video over the course of about three months with locations including Orpington High Street, the town’s Starbucks, Tesco car park and Priory Gardens.
Matthew said: “We never had a weekend to do it. The challenging bit is getting all of us here to do it.”
In a cool twist, one of the group – Andy Kinnear – actually worked on the Marvel movie.
Matthew said: “His bosses were going ‘how’s yours coming along?’ so that was quite fun for him.”
