Youtube stars from south east London are crowdfunding to get their debut film into cinemas across the country.

Downham actor and Brit School graduate Jovian Wade, aka EastEnders’s Jordan Johnson, stars in the independent comedy The Weekend alongside Youtube comedy pals Bromley-based Dee Kaate and fellow Brit-alum Percelle Ascott.

Together the trio produce The Wall of Comedy brand, and have 2.4million followers across social media while their debut Mandem on the Wall episode on Youtube clocked up more than 1.5million views.

Directed by Sheridan De Myers, their film The Weekend was shot in 2015 in Peckham and Hackney and tells the story of three friends who mistakenly bring home a bag containing £100,000. But a life of fast cars and parties is interrupted when a gangster sends his enforcers to get the money back.

As well as Wade’s role in EastEnders, between them the young cast have also acted in projects including E4’s Younger, Silent Witness and Doctor Who. The Weekend’s story was conceived by MTV Wild ‘N Out star Kojo and the cast also features prankster Ashley Inkz, comedian Arnold Jorge and TV presenter Shanie Ryan.

Having come up independently through Youtube, the filmmakers are keen to stay independent and have chosen a crowdfunding route to get The Weekend on the big screen, rather than pursuing a distributor.

Their target of £100,000 will allow them to show the film in 25 cities and contributors can pick up perks ranging from merchandise to red carpet tickets, mentoring Skype calls with the cast and private screenings. Director De Myers is also offering three contributors the chance to join the crew of his next London-based feature.

In addition to the fundraising, the cast is touring schools and universities to encourage more diversity in the arts.

Wade said: “Everyone has ambitions and dreams – for us, it was entertainment, but they can be absolutely anything! What we want people to know is that if there’s something you want to achieve, then get out there and do it. That’s why we’re touring, to spread that message.”
