Another T-rex sized slab of family-friendly brick-based fun has arrived in the form of Lego Jurassic World.

As its name suggests, this game is a tie-in with the fourth and latest instalment in the dinosaur movie franchise.

But that's only a quarter of the story – as the game also contains segments based on the earlier three films too, so that's the whole series covered Lego-style to give fans plenty to get their teeth into.

By my rough count, TT Games has now produced more than two dozen Lego-themed games down the years and its titles have a very recognisable and familiar style.

Jurassic World very much fits the TT mould and you'll feel instantly at home if you've ever played any of its previous Lego releases such as the Batman, Hobbit and Marvel games.

Through 20 levels in total, the gameplay is the usual combination of platforming, puzzle-solving, action sequences, smashing up anything made of bricks and gobbling up those little Lego studs, all across environments and situations inspired by the movies.

The trademark humour that is weaved into every Lego game and raises many a giggle is here too, and up to its usual mirthful standards.

The jokes are enough to keep grown-up players smiling while the violence and gore of the source material has been removed or replaced with whimsical re-imaginings so it's perfectly safe for little players to get their hands on.

News Shopper:

Aside from gameplay and humour, all the other normal ingredients of a Lego game are present and correct.

For instance, there is the expected array of playable characters (including dinosaurs!) who come equipped with a range of different skills to make use of, and there's the option to replay levels in free play mode so you can go back and try to find all the hidden areas and bonuses scattered around.

The colourful, cute graphics meet expectations and the audio is decent too, including dialogue from the movies.

News Shopper:

There are a few nice and novel touches during the game such as being able to design your own dinosaurs but overall Lego Jurassic World is very safe and similar in structure to many of the past Lego games.

Playing it, it feels like the trusted formula used for these games is starting to get a little stale.

It’s hard to be too harsh on TT for that though, because if you had put together a checklist of things you wanted including in a Lego game based on the Jurassic films just about everything you would have asked for is here.

News Shopper:

Naturally, if you've played any of the past Lego games and not enjoyed them, or if you're not a fan of the dinosaur films, you'll not find anything to get you excited here.

But if you are a fan of both the games and the movies, you'll find a fun game that shows a decent amount of respect and affection for the stories and creatures it portrays.

It doesn’t set the world alight or leave a big dino-sized footprint on gaming’s history, but it does an excellent job of what it sets out to do.
