There were sad faces all-round last time out when our quest to find the best pub quizzes in south east London and north Kent hit the buffers with the cancelled Deptford Cinema film quiz.

And that took its toll on our numbers, with just a dedicated two turning out for the sequel.

We just had to return, eager to give the quiz – which raises money for the very cool Deptford Cinema – a fair hearing.

Run by the team who have built and run their own cinema and hosted in the manor of Goldsmiths, which produced film talent such as Steve McQueen and Sam Taylor-Johnson, we were expecting a rough ride.

To recap what we already knew was in store: The Amersham Arms is a decent pub in a fun studenty area, known for its events, DJ nights and comedy.

They serve a good range of beers at prices that won’t bust your pockets and a tasty burger menu (even if they are served on a prison tray with plastic cutlery).

TEST YOURSELF*

Wonder how you would have fared? Here’s a taster of some of the questions (answers at the bottom)...

  • Which film won this year’s Best Picture Oscar?
  • Name the comic book adaptation which starred these three actors: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis and Daniel Craig
  • Who was chosen to direct the new film in the Alien franchise?
  • Which actor in Django Unchained did not get top billing for the first time in 16 years?
  • Father and son Brendan and Domhnall Gleeson appear together Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pts I and II, what character does Domhnall play?
  • Which film beat Saving Private Ryan to the Best Picture Oscar in 1999?

We arrived around 7.30pm for an 8pm start and found it a little tricky to find a place to park our bums, due not to enormous numbers rather limited seating.

Eventually settled in, the quiz began more or less on time and was hosted by a trio of friendly t-shirted young guns who were full of life and humour. Importantly, they were easy to hear.

Seven teams competed with an entry fee of £2 per person and a maximum team size of six.

It was a well put-together and testing quiz, with four distinct rounds.

As well as a general knowledge round, there was the customary picture round (identify the film which featured the eye patch-wearing character), questions on comic book adaptations, a series of interconnected questions where you had to find the link, a guess who and a dastardly audio round in which you had to identify the actor and the film.

If the latter sounds easy then the extra twist was each of the actors was doing a particularly bad accent: easy to identify Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, less so Nic Cage in National Treasure 2.

It seems obvious to say but it’s really not for you if you don’t like film but it was pretty accessible and questions started off relatively simple, like name the James Bond actor who was born in Ireland? (Pierce Brosnan).

The quizmasters rattled through at a good pace, with plenty of laughs along the way.

It was only when we got to the marking that things moved momentarily a bit slowly (we had a train to catch), but it didn’t hold back from a great evening, which raised money for an important community asset – the Deptford Cinema.

On top of that, we won (though we've still to receive the e-mail with our winning tickets).
