A show by older people in Greenwich could become an annual event after sell-out success last week.

Labyrinth was overwhelmingly popular when it was performed at Greenwich Theatre on Wednesday (March 11).

It was the result of two years’ work between the theatre and Montage Theatre Arts, a charity based at The Albany in Deptford.

Two other companies, First Framework and Green Candle, helped to create the evening’s entertainment.

Greenwich Theatre’s executive director James Haddrell said: “We had virtually a full house and the evening ended with a Q&A session so the audience could get involved. It was quite challenging to explore this kind of work and what’s important about it, and it was clear that people found it inspiring and enjoyable.”

He added: “Our oldest performer was 93-year-old Doris Dowsett-Muench.

“She acted, danced and told the story about the loss of the man in her life, which was inspiring and unexpectedly very funny. Doris is a natural performer and was one of the stars of the night.”

“We’d like to make it an annual event because there are not enough companies doing this kind of work and hopefully it will stimulate growth in an area where there is obviously a lot of overlooked talent.”

Montage Arts' Judy Gordon, who co-produced Labyrinth, said: "It was a fantastic celebration of the work that has been done between Montage and Greenwich Theatre over the past two years – when the performers stepped out onto the stage with the full theatre light and sound facilities around them and a packed auditorium of people come to see them perform, they all said that it felt like a real culmination of an ambitious programme of work.

“Being around the theatre before the event started, I could see how high the audience anticipation was – it was such a great endorsement to see so many people gathered together for the event, and it certainly wasn’t all friends and family.

"There was clearly a great deal of interest from both the community and the industry in what we’ve been doing.”

“This is just the beginning – we are already working with Greenwich Theatre to explore ways to build on the success of all the strands of our collaboration, with Labyrinth offering us a great starting point for the next stage.”
