London will host one of the world’s most important celebrations of LGBT cinema next month.

South east London’s BFI Southbank cinema will be the central hub of the BFI Flare festival from March 19 to 29, which features 50 feature films, more than 100 shorts and lots of events, parties, appearances and discussions.

James Franco and Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto star in the opening night movie, the UK premiere of I Am Michael, about the real-life crusading gay journalist-turned-anti-gay pastor Michael Glatze.

It closes with the European premiere of Malcolm Ingram’s rousing and topical look at the experience of high-level LGBT sportspeople, Out to Win.

Among the events tied-in to the festival are a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show followed by a sure-to-be raucous after party to celebrate the iconic film’s 40th birthday. There will also be a Warrior Woman party to mark 20 years of Xena: Warrior Princess.

Tickets go on sale to BFI members on February 25 and everyone else on March 2 at bfi.org.uk/flare.
