Older folk with little or no dancing experience are being encouraged to take part in a workshop as part of this September’s Tall Ships Festival in Greenwich.

Up to 50 fantastic ships will arrive on the Thames from September 5 to 9 and the dances, called One Sea, Many Seascapes are part of the many planned festivities.

The workshop is being developed out of weekly performance classes at Greenwich Theatre run with charity Montage Theatre Arts, who are based at The Albany in Deptford, and will receive three or four pop-up performances along the river and possibly in Greenwich Park.

Montage’s Anna Brown said: “We've got some dances in the making about what the sea and the seaside mean to us and we're looking to get lots of older people, as many as 50, involved in creating dances to perform during the Tall Ships event.”

She added: “People can be involved in one, two or all of them

“We should have about 15 in our group already so they will make up the core of the team.”

Anyone interested should join the introductory workshop at Greenwich Theatre on September 5, which will be followed by two rehearsals over the weekend.

Anna said: “It's about trying to do something creative together and really enjoying the experience. The Tall Ships are fabulous so it's all really exciting.”

Greenwich Theatre’s artistic and executive director James Haddrell said: “Older people who get involved in the free dance workshops don't need any experience, just a willingness to get involved, meet new friends and enjoy being part of a performance.

“We recommend 55+ but it's open to anyone who considers themselves to be an older person.”
