YOU know what it’s like – wading through the virtual sewage of Facebook statuses dedicated to ‘the most amazing boyfriend in the world ever’ and being ‘the luckiest boy in the world to have found my soul mate’.

It’s enough to make you feel queasy, right? Well, you’re not alone. According to research by eBay, the vaguely venereal-sounding Social Display of Affection (SDA) has overtaken the Public Display of Affection (PDA) as the most biggest annoyance of singletons and couples alike.

The research showed that just over a quarter (26 per cent) of Brits admit seeing their friends gush about how much they love their partners on social media is top of the Valentine’s Day sick list.

At the same time, posting a boastful picture of a gift online turns one in three females into the green-eyed monster.

Apparently 38 per cent of us feel under pressure to show off our gifts online and 24 per cent of women admit they hint at wanting thoughtful presents simply so they can brag.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day gifting, eBay.co.uk reveals that a present from an unwanted admirer is the most embarrassing, and receiving flowers at work a close second.

More than half of women (55%) state that ‘something thoughtful’ is what they want the most.

eBay’s research also revealed the top 5 gifts. It seems girls are fairly easy to please

Top 5 Valentine’s Day Gifts:

1.     Perfume (50%)
2.     Jewellery (46%)
3.     Music (19%)
4.     Handbag (17%)
5.     Lingerie (15%)

The average Brit will spend £30 on their partner with men spending an average of 48% more than women, according to the research.

eBay has seen a steep increase in sales of lingerie (59%) from brands and retailers available on the site including the likes of Figleaves, Debenhams and House of Fraser.

Presents such as Links of London charm bracelets have also shot up 49% over the last couple of weeks in the lead up to the romantic day.

Laura Wilkinson-Rea of eBay said: “Give your loved one something to boast about this Valentine’s. Whether you’re looking for a loved ones favourite scent; accessories to go with a date night outfit or something that simply says I love you, eBay.co.uk has a fantastic selection of gifts to chose from.”
