VIDEO: Comedy trio FunBags have their eyes on the small screen
SOUTH East London comedy trio Fun Bags are making waves on the capital’s comedy circuit and they are aiming for a spot on your screen soon.
The group – consisting stand-ups Jo Burke, Gemma Layton, Jacqui Curran – have already amassed semi final spots in competitions including So You Think You’re Funny, Funny Women, Laughing Horse and Golden Jester.
Musical skit Shopping in Lidl by Gemma as her character Mercedes Benson has over 100,000 hits on Youtube and has even led for people to campaign for it to be Christmas number one. It was filmed in Catford.
FunBag Jo said: “It’s great getting our name out there but we want to get a female comedy show on TV as there hasn’t really been one in a while.”
The trio started off doing solo stand up comedy and came together when Goldsmiths graduate Jo scoured her contacts to assemble a group.
She found fellow solo stand-ups Jacqui, a nanny working at a children’s pre-school, and Gemma, who works at a call centre. All three are trained actors, meaning sketches are often character-based.
Jo, who debuted her comedy play Deadlock at the Canal Cafe Theatre last weekend, said: “I wanted people who were at the same level as me. People who could get their head around the kind of stuff I wanted to do.”
That was three years ago, and since then they have performed around London and at the Edinburgh Festival, meeting every week with ideas.
They cite influences such as of Smack the Pony, Victoria Wood, The League of Gentlemen and Kristin Wiig.
Jacqui said: “We get most of our inspiration from everyday life. I use the quirky and uncomfortable moments I often experience daily at work and at home.”
