Former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen brings Centrally Heated Knickers to Deptford
BELOVED author and former children’s laureate Michael Rosen is bringing his Centrally Heated Knickers to Deptford.
The poet’s show - based on his book of the same name - is about science, imagination and sound and is a collaboration with The Homemade Orchestra.
It will be performed at The Albany on Saturday, October 19.
The 67-year-old said: “The show is about sound, the science and imagination around sound and we explore that with music and digital noise and poems and mime.
“It started off as a book called Centrally Heated Knickers which is about science and technology including sound. With a group of musicians and a dancer we improvised and developed a script out of the book. We got a wonderful director in to take it to the next level.”
And Michael said he is looking forward to heading back to The Albany.
He said: “It is really intimate with a strong sense of the community. I really like it when I’ve been.”
Michael has written over 140 books, most of them for children.
He said: “Their curiosity is wonderful. It is like a great wave. I have found that when you work with children almost the first thing that comes to their mind is a question.
“My daughter asked me this morning, she’s 12, where did the Easter Island statues comes from?”
Nearly everybody will have read a Michael Rosen book as a child, but just as memorable as his words are the illustrations.
Michael said: “I feel I hand over my work to an illustrator and it is up to them to do their best or worst. I can’t make a book, all I can do is the words.
“I can say without hesitation that the collaborations I have done with (Sidcup’s) Quentin Blake are amazing.
“Helen Oxenbury’s artwork for We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is quite extraordinary.
“I think Quentin Blake’s illustration for my Sad book are of the same level.”
Michael Rosen’s Centrally Heated Knickers is at The Albany on October 19, with performances at 2.30pm and 5.30pm. Tickets cost £12 or £8 concessions. Family tickets £36. Go to thealbany.org.uk or call 020 8692 4446.
