Review: The Potted Fish Company
GETTING post is always fun. So imagine my delight when an enormous box arrived at the office with my name on it.
Inside was a little blanket wrapped around an ice block with some little pots of fish inside.
To be entirely frank, I didn’t realise this fish was coming. Every now and then we get sent e-mails with odd offers and I was just in the mood to say yes for once.
So there I was with half a dozen pots of chilled pate-like fish – a couple of Old English Potted Crab, two Potted Chilli Crab and two Potted Smoked Mackerel with Horseradish, all from the Potted Fish Company.
Faced with this happy circumstance, I gave some away and took the rest home for dinner.
But first, I read the literature. The Potted Fish Company was set up by then-teenager Jonathan Bailey in Devon, uses sustainable fish (nice) and donates 10 per cent of its profits to local charities.
It is available in local delis and now supermarkets too.
The packet said to have it with pasta, so that’s what I did – just flaked it through some little twists.
If I’m entirely frank, I didn’t like the layer of butter on the top. It was just an additional layer of fat that was unnecessary.
A few bits of crunchiness had crept in, I’ve a feeling it was shell.
Otherwise, I was very grateful. It was tasty and the perfect accompaniment for pasta, just as it said it would be.
