WHEN comedian Lucy Porter performs in the Comedy Road Show at Bluewater, she’ll be entertaining at the centre’s purpose-built Glow events venue, but she likes the idea of some impromptu comedy in the shops.

Speaking to Vibe, the mum-of-two from Croydon who is married to The Thick of It actor Justin Edwards, said: “It would be quite good fun – to surprise people in the changing room, pop in and tell them a joke while they’re trying on a swimsuit.

“Maybe we could do it next year. We’ll try a more conventional approach this year.”
Lucy will play on July 26, on the same bill as the likes of Richard Herring, Hal Cruttenden and Neil Fitzmaurice.

She said: “It is quite an astonishing line-up of people. They have got awesome comedians and lovely people like Richard Herring and Isy Suttie.”

Lucy, who grew up idolising Dave Allen and who won Celebrity Mastermind with Steve Martin as her specialist subject, is looking forward to sharing the bill with other comics.

She said: “Comedy is like a little village and I’m the village idiot.

“We’ll have a good laugh and a bit of camaraderie backstage. It is always nice if there are loads of other comics there because you know that even if you do a joke that doesn’t work all the other comics will laugh about it because they are enjoying the fact that it didn’t go well.”

The 40-year-old singled out Isy Suttie – familiar to TV viewers as Peep Show’s Dobby, and playing in the road show on August 2 – as one of her current favourite comedians.

She said: “She is just awesome. She does musical comedy, she writes sitcoms, she acts. She’s a renaissance woman.”

For those not familiar with Lucy’s comedy, she describes it as confessional.

She said: “I may talk about my real life and things like my husband’s feet – which he’s not delighted about.

"I talk about quite mundane things like the Argos customer reviews, daytime television, shoe racks and it is more interesting than it sounds. I like to think I find humour in the everyday situation.

“I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself either. It is not just my family that come in for a ribbing.”
