Review: The Beech Tree, St Mary Cray
5:43pm Thursday 22nd November 2012 in Freetime latest news By PubSpy
OMG, why did I venture into this one?
The Beech Tree is the most uninviting, soulless and sombre pub you are ever likely to find.
In truth, the note taped to the door should have told me all I needed to know and had me turning on my heel as soon as I read: “Regulars only – due to our neighbours complaining”.
However, my curiosity got the better of me; after all, if only regulars are allowed in how does anyone get to become a regular?
But once you’re inside the bigger question is: ‘Why would anyone want to be a regular here?’
Faced by a bland, unwelcoming interior, the pub looks like it was decorated by someone throwing a firework into a tin of black paint.
The walls are then adorned with a mixture of huge expanses of what look like blank notice boards, interspersed occasionally with faded old pictures.
The only existence of colour is a typically horrendous pub carpet of the worst possible design (worst possible that is, until you see the second carpet in the back room).
There were three people in the front room, presumably all regulars, but no-one spoke so I couldn’t be sure.
As well as a pint of Kronenbourg I splashed out 50p on the only food available, a stale cheese roll which had definitely seen a few better days.
Thinking things could only improve I ventured into the back room where the main item was a pool table.
Here, a pair of ‘regulars’ were chucking cash as fast as possible into a fruit machine called ‘Dublin yer money’ – although no matter how much they tried, they didn’t.
This is clearly a sport in St Mary Cray as they’d both dressed especially for the marathon spending session in tracksuits and trainers.
Even the yellow tags on the hoodies added to their ‘sportsman’ look.
As Raghav’s 'Can’t Get Enough' blasted from the jukebox I can only assume it had a random setting as the music certainly fitted into this category.
In the outhouse area at the back, dominated by the pool table and misnamed fruitie, you also find the toilet entrances.
Presumably the regulars know better than to take on the cheese rolls in any quantity as the width of the door on the gents would preclude anyone above average size even entering, though anyone with an average sense of smell will also be well and truly put off.
The toilets keep up the style of decoration, although this time the black is replaced with bright blue paint chucked at the walls – if you do dare venture in.
I’d avoid the cracked urinal on the left.
Escaping back to the front room I dawdled only to wonder why washing was drying on the radiator.
However, as fruit flies then started to mass around my pint I thought my exit was long overdue.
Leaving hurriedly, the second sign I saw in this pub left me, if anything, even more incredulous than the first - ‘Under new management’.
As I escaped back into Wellington Road I was faced by the cold and foreboding Salvation Army building.
For the first time in my life, having visited The Beech Tree, I wondered if the Sally Army’s view of drinking might actually be right after all!

May i ask why did you employ a snot nose cow anyway? No problem mate if you could kindly give your number i will telephone you tonight with my issues and we can talk because having living only a couple of doors down from you my friend i feel that having another landlord take over is a big issue for many of us on Wellington Road as we all deep down do not want a pub so 9 times out of 10 people down this road are going to try the best in getting you out. Especially directly oppisite you 'Shirley Morris' who is most likely on the phone as we speak!

Well I am doing my best to keep the noise down I make regular checks to make sure it can't be heard across the road at your house. I have introduced myself to my next door neighbours and they have had no complaints about the noise. As for the parking on the pavement there is nothing I can do about that the parking is bad. And I agree it is a pain. If there are any problems that you legitatmly have feel free to pop over and I will be willing to discuss any issues you have. I am a friendly person. And would like to resolve any of these issues
Still, time will tell as its through the summer months where alot of the other issues have caused problems in the past.

Well I park opposite the pub I did park out the front until I was advised that it is a foot path and since stopped. Unfortunately the pub has been here many years longer than the houses around it. And I do feel sorry for any residence that moved next to a pub not realising what that would intail. As I have said I will do my best to controll the noise but considering many of my customers are neighbours they know the issues that are ongoing dont be annonomous pop in if you have a real issue I will deal with it best I can
ise controll officers, you name it its been tried and took a very long time in the end.People would now rather go straight to the top as its seems to get dealt with quicker. As so many people do the complaining aswell but would rather remain unknown due to the consequences afterwards which happened in the past. Also alot of them a elderly and too worried about complaining to you personally. So going down the other route is so much easier for alot of them.

Ok as the publican of this pub I see there is obviously quite an issue here. Firstly the pub is doing really well at the moment we have a lot of loyal local customers. But I really think this is getting right out of hand. I just want the pub to get along with the neighbours. But obviously there has been a lot of upset on the past so there are some of you that have had enough and I understand that. But I am keeping the noise to a minimum and we are not open late apart from a Friday night. There really is no excessive noise coming from within the pub I keep the music to a low. Please let's just stop this argument before it gets out of hand. Pubs are a dieing trade and it is such a shame it's the only job I love doing and it's an institution. Please let's just give it a go ....

The pub has had far too many chances over the years and you may well of spoken to the police but you obviously havn't read the police reports, complaints from residents and many, many more it does have a bad reputation even more so now with the type of people you are letting in but untill you upset them you wont find out, which is why its being avoided and proof from a newspaper reporter says it all.Alot of the issues are already creeping back including blasting the music and parking on a public pathway.I cant see this pub lasting long as the residents just wont put up with it which is why the last landlord had to go!!!!I dont think having a make over will have any effect on this pub to be honest.Im sure it would please many people if it was closed for good as having 3 pubs in the same road which is mainly young families with children and elderly would appreciate something more like a convinience store which im sure would take alot more money!!!
What are they - I only know of the one
