With puddings, pies and boozy Christmas parties just around the corner, it’s the time of year we need a gym more than ever. But how do you choose the right one and make sure you stick at it?

We asked the experts at Shapers ladies-only gym for their advice. Here’s their dos and don’ts.

News Shopper:

Don't join a gym just because your friends go there.  Find the right fitness centre for you, where you feel comfortable, safe and not intimidated by the members. Otherwise you simply won't use it and it will be a waste of your money.

Don't go overboard on the number of visits - build up to the number of visits you do otherwise you'll have overkill.  Start slowly with the number of sessions you do and your body will naturally and gradually want to do more.  You should be having fun not punishing yourself!

Don't feel you have to do every class.  Cherry pick the ones you want to try.  Some centres offer various levels, or short classes which fit in with busy lifestyles.

Do ensure you have an induction and that you feel comfortable with the surroundings.

Do find a centre that is right for you. Some places are full of mirrors and members posing in their best lycra. Other fitness centres don't have mirrors to avoid this. Ask and you will find.

Do find out if there is always a personal trainer on hand.  Ask if you get personal training reviews throughout your membership.   A good gym won’t just leave you to get on with it.
