Polhill Arms

The Polhill Arms, in London Road, Halstead, Sevenoaks, was first used as a public house during the reign of Charles I during the 18th Century.

It was originally built by the Polhill family, who were landowners, for the use of their workers. Brewery registered in 1895, it has changed hands many times over the years but has a comfortable "olde worlde" atmosphere, with a beamed ceiling and a large open fireplace for a roaring fire.

Now in the hands of James and Andrea O'Keefe, the Polhill Arms, more than ever, is able to cater for a wide range of needs.

With its ideal position, on the top of Polhill, the Polhill Arms has stunning panoramic views and a garden with a newly built children's play area.

It offers a wide and varied menu, catering for most tastes, including vegetarians. A children's menu includes all the usual youngsters' favourites, such as burgers and chicken nuggets.

The pub and restaurant also offers a fine selection of wines to accompany the superb home-cooked food - most of which is made from fresh, local produce.

For starters, you could try the Whitebait served with a wedge of lemon, salad and bread for £3.50, deep fried camembert on lettuce and tomato with a salad garnish and baguette for £3.50 or the homemade soup of the day served with bread and butter for £2.50.

Fish is popular for a main dish, including breaded cod, haddock, plaice or scampi all served with peas and a choice of potatoes for £4.95.

Andrea said: "Our sausage and mash in onion gravy in a large Yorkshire pudding is a big favourite, costing just £4.95, and our roast beef always goes well and costs £5.50."

There are also a selection of salads, sandwiches and jacket potatoes.

Making use of the large car park, people travel from miles away for an evening meal, traditional Sunday roast or just a few drinks and a light meal.

The Polhill Arms has a large function room, available free of charge, which is capable of hosting events for up to 80 people. This room has been used in the past for quiz nights, christenings, weddings, wakes, birthday parties and conferences.

Andrea said: "Our function room is in an area away from the bar, with its own entrance as well as a door through to the main pub. It is a great place to hold a Christmas party, wedding reception or birthday celebration. Alternatively, you can book a table in the bar area for a traditional English meal for a few people."

Live entertainment is an event at the Polhill Arms. Live bands and Karaoke are a popular evening out.

The Polhill Arms is very much involved in local sport, with two pool teams, two dart teams and a football team, all of which have enjoyed success over the years. Live, televised sport is shown regularly, covering all major sporting events.

The proprietors, James and Andrea, have their own family, and make children of all ages especially welcome. New disabled facilities have just been added to the Polhill Arms, making it convenient for disabled visitors.
