Review: Franklins Restaurant, East Dulwich

HAVING never tried oysters before, I was a little curious to see what all the fuss was about.

And Franklins Restaurant did not dispel my anticipation.

Nearing the end of Lordship Lane's spate of boutiques and specialists, Franklins is a vintage bar and restaurant located on a corner across the street from its namesake farm shop.

Entering the restaurant, we were greeted with a warm atmosphere and unusual art décor, depicting a few Dulwich neighbourhoods.

The waitress led us past a high rise bar with rustic wooden seats to a small, elegant restaurant out the back which was nothing if not a little romantically cramped.

We were presented with a plate of Colchester rock oysters and native Number 2 oysters, which we lightly seasoned with balsamic vinegar and Tabasco.

This was perfectly accompanied by a glass of Viognier and elderflower wine, Sauvignon Touraine.

The oysters did not disappoint - they were scrumptious, well prepared and easy to eat.

Next it was time for our starters.

My fiancé chose smoked eel with potatoes and dill, while I enjoyed a poached fillet of beef with pickles and horseradish.

Both were incredible; beautifully cooked and presented.

For our main, I chose a fish pie served with greens, while my fiancé sampled salt marsh lamb served with spinach and leeks.

To finish, we were spoilt with a chocolate brownie which melted on the tongue, and vanilla ice cream.

A three course meal will set you back around £30 per person, not including drinks.
