Review: Great British Fish and Chip Shop, Greenwich

HAVING lived the student lifestyle up to fairly recently, I’m ashamed to admit I’ve seen the inside of many takeaways.

Not being a big fan of Chinese or Indian food, I know from experience what makes good fish and chips and the Great British Fish and Chip Shop, in King William Walk, ticks more boxes than most.

The menu is full of variety for fish lovers, featuring all the regulars you would expect from your average chippie but also some items you might not, including lemon sole, squid and giant fish fingers.

I opted for large cod and chips priced at £8.50 with no extra charge to eat at the in-house restaurant upstairs.

My meal was exceptional – the fish was freshly cooked and delivered that morning from Billingsgate market – and the restaurant was relaxed, quiet and clean.

My criteria for a decent takeaway includes ketchup supplied free-of-charge – so as soon as I saw it listed on the menu at 25p, I feared the worst. However, when the waiter, helpful and friendly from the off, delivered my food with tartare sauce and ketchup thrown in – I knew I was onto a winner.

If I had to criticise one thing it would be that serving food wrapped in paper to restaurant customers doesn’t feel quite right.

But decent fish and chips are increasingly difficult to find in London meaning the Great British Fish and Chip Shop is certainly one to treasure.
