More than 70 food outlets around the Bromley borough have been told their hygiene needs urgent or major improvement.

Our gallery above shows the 72 places to eat with the lowest scores in the area – and it includes four businesses given the worst possible rating of zero stars.

Among the eateries judged poorly for their hygiene and awarded one or fewer stars are restaurants, takeaways, cafes, shops, sports organisations and social clubs.

You'll find them around the borough including in Bromley, Beckenham, Orpington, Petts Wood, Hayes, Mottingham and Penge.

The details, correct as of June 13, have all been published on the government’s Food Standards Agency website.

The ratings have been given to businesses to reflect the standards of food hygiene found when they were inspected by food safety officers from Bromley Council over the past few months.

Inspectors check the following three elements:

1. How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

2. The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

3. How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

RESPONSES FROM BUSINESSES

All the businesses featured in this article have been inspected within the past year. We have omitted any that have been re-inspected and are due to have a new score published.

As all the details are correct at the time of publishing, we will not amend or remove anything. However, we will update this page with any responses from the business owners explaining why they got a low score and what they’ve done to fix the problems. If you are the owner or manager of one of the food outlets you can submit your comments here

Mahmud Ahmed, manager of Mumbai Express, said: "We have implemented the various changes set out in our visit in February. We are awaiting a revisit.

"We understand that the rating can be concerning to our customers but I can assure you that we have taken on board and wholly implemented the changes to improve our rating.

"We are committed to these procedures and it was a case of inexperience."
