News Shopper: Meat the Butcher

More people want to know they can trust and trace the meat they eat, so are turning to purveyors of quality

Consumer reaction to the horsemeat scandal has revealed a real lack of public trust over the supply of processed meat to the major retailers. This has resulted in a huge upsurge of custom in butchers’ shops across the UK.

The revelations about what has been going into some supermarket products and ready meals has shocked many people, and it has also made customers recognise that the integrity and specialist skills of their local butchers offer them considerably more than the prospect of cheap meat from other suppliers.

Food traceability has been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, prompting many people to question more than ever what’s going into their shopping baskets. Gary Mercer and Sarah Clout have long believed that local is best; indeed, that is why they opened Holwood Farm Shop last October. Their delightful “deli in the country”, which nestles between Keston and Downe, is stocked with a wealth of local products, including traditionally reared meat from Monkshill Farm at Faversham, Wealden fruit and veg and cakes handmade for them at nearby Petts Wood. The coffee shop serves up freshly prepared food and locally roasted coffee and many of the ingredients on the menu come from the farm shop
