SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched the this week’s Bake Off, this article could seriously ruin it for you.

Greenwich firefighter Mat Riley flirted with the exit on last night’s Great British Bake Off but lived to bake another day.

After his success with biscuits last week, Mat kneaded a little luck to make it through bread week.

Instead it was the end for Dorret Conway, whose first round walnut and stilton soda bread ‘could have been more intense’ and her Tracy Emin-inspired unmade bed bread sculpture showstopper didn’t capture the judges’ imagination.

For his quick bread signature bake, 37-year-old Mat made a Mexican style bread with jalapeno and Mexican cheddar which had a lovely crust according to Mary Berry but Paul Hollywood thought was overworked.

The second round technical challenge of baguettes saw Mat finish a disappointing eight. While his bread sculpture of Brighton Pavilion looked and tasted impressive.

“It is really because it is really effective because you just simplified everything. I love that,” said Paul.

But, unfortunately, he added: “It’s underproved and it’s underbaked.”

“The flavours are nice,” he said. “It’s just come down to 10 minutes in an oven.”

If only he’d listened to his wife.

At the end of the programme, Mat said: “My wife told me before I came up for bread week that I had to bake everything for at least 10 minutes longer than I normally would. And she’s right.”

Meanwhile, prison officer Paul stunned the judges with his astounding lion bread sculpture, which won special commendation from the judges.

Even that was not enough to secure the star baker accolade, which again went to Ian.

Next week, the bakers tackle puddings.
