Everyone loves a good Sunday roast so we made it our mission to find the best ones in south east London and north Kent.
We asked our Twitter and Facebook followers where the best place to get a roast dinner is and were inundated with responses.

The Old Jail
Where? Jail Lane, Biggin Hill TN16 3AX
Why? Out in the countryside in Biggin Hill, you’re sure of a friendly welcome and a good feed.
The pub serves chicken, beef and pork belly on a Sunday.
Barmaid Jenny said: “In a nutshell, I think it is the environment of the pub. When people have a good experience, they pass that on.
“We just stick to good home values. We are local with our meat and veg.”

The Five Bells
Where? Church Road, Chelsfield BR6 7RE
Why? A traditional homely roast should arguably be enjoyed in traditional homely surroundings and they don’t come much better than the 350-year-old, grade II-listed Five Bells which sits in a conservation area in Chelsfield.
Landlady Kay Stone said: “We use the finest ingredients and our brilliant chefs cook them.”
Every week, there are three roasts with regular beef and two other meats on rotation. A new addition is the ‘carve your own’ where you can slice your own chicken (or other meat on request) at your table.
On Facebook, Lana Pender said: “The Five Bells in Chelsfield, by far the best roast I've had!”

Green Pea
Where? Trafalgar Road, Greenwich SE10 9UW
Why? Those that have visited already know how good it is: according to Trip Advisor, this is one of the best restaurants in London, beating places boasting Michelin stars.
But there are no tiny portions here.
Owner Tom O’Connor said: “We give people more than one and a half slices of lamb. What we do is give at least four or five slices of meat. We give lots of roast potatoes and piles of roast veg. We give people value for money.
“And freshness is the most important part.”

Dial Arch
Where? Major Draper Street, Royal Arsenal SE18 6GH
Why? Youngs’ operation manager Toby Cowan said: "People come to the Dial Arch for our Sunday roasts because of the four mouth-watering roasts we offer, all served with goose fat roast potatoes, double egg Yorkshire puddings, seasonal veg and steaming hot, homemade gravy.
“We're also proud to offer a delicious vegetarian option, the wild mushroom, brie & spinach Wellington, which is served with olive oil roast potatoes and all the trimmings.
“So whether you're at a table in our beautiful dining room or on a sofa next to the fire, reading the papers and tucking into a spicy Bloody Mary, Sundays at the Dial Arch are always PERFECT.”

White Hart
Where? High Street, Eltham SE9 1DA
Why? Owners Simon and Dave told us: “To us, food is synonymous with freshness, quality and a hot grill.
“We are your quintessential diner which preserves one of South east London's great traditions: a really great Carvery that offers Traditional Roast Beef , Roast Turkey and our own Honey Glazed ham, all served with Seasonal Vegetables.
“We use our Fantastic local Butcher Fred in New Eltham. All our food is fresh and homemade.”
Penny Walshe tweeted us to say: “The White Hart in Eltham does the best carvery I have ever tasted.”
Malt Shovel
Where? Darenth Road, Dartford DA1 1LP
Why? A second Youngs pub on our list but it undoubtedly deserves to be here. The Malt Shovel is one of Dartford’s oldest building and PubSpy was raving about it as far back as 2009.
On Facebook, Liam Hudson said: “The Malt Shovel, although book in advance as very popular as very good and reasonably priced.”
Matthew Brannon tweeted us to say: “The Malt Shovel in Dartford for Sunday Roasts - cauliflower cheese is out of this world.”
The Birchwood
Where? Grovebury Road, Abbey Wood SE2 9BB
Why? Demand has surged recently for the Birchwood’s roasts with hard work paying off through good word of mouth.
Chef Maria Wright said: “We have got a great butcher so our meat is really good and fresh. It is like your mum and dad’s roast, with a little bit of a twist.”
Maria cooks two roasts every Sunday as well as something a little bit different, her chance to express herself in the kitchen.
On Facebook Tracy n Stig Mascarenhas said: “The Birchwood, Abbeywood.. fresh veg.. lots of meat and crispy spuds.. amazing for £7.50.”
Dory Fish added: “The Birchwood pub, lovely lunch , good value !!

Toby Carvery

Why? Overwhelmingly the top choice of our Twitter and Facebook followers, we’re guessing because it’s good quality at a near unbeatable price. And the advantage of a carvery, as we all know, is that you can fill your boots.
Donna Atkins was definitive on Facebook. She responded to question of where to get a great roast with: “Toby carvery without a doubt!”
