Greenwich’s maritime and scientific history are celebrated in a new cocktail, The GMT.

The drink reflects two of the town’s icons: its name comes from Greenwich Mean Time, while the core ingredient is Cutty Sark whisky.

It was created by mixologists at Mercure London Greenwich to promote the area in VisitEngland’s English City Breaks campaign.

Mercure London Greenwich’s Alberto Espada said: “The GMT takes as its soul the subtle undertones of Cutty Sark Whisky, created in 1923 that took inspiration from the most famous Scottish-built clipper, now a major visitor attraction and landmark in Greenwich.

“The cocktail oozes the strident roar of Courvoisier brandy and the mellow richness of Martini Rosso.

“All this excitement is gently soothed by some local honey and enlivened with zestful splash of orange juice and bitters. The GMT is a fitting celebration of the tradition and history of Greenwich, home to some of the finest pubs and bars in the capital.”

The Recipe

50ml Cutty Sark Whisky, 25ml Martini Rosso, Dash of Corvoisier, 75ml fresh orange juice, 2 tablespoons Greenwich honey, 3 drops Angostura bitters, Garnished with mint and orange (lavender in summer).

Shake mixture (minus bitters) vigorously until honey has dissolved. Serve over crushed ice, add bitters and garnish with orange and mint.
