A CURRY house in Downham is letting diners behind the scenes to see how their dinners are made and pick up tips from the chefs.

Madhuwan in Bromley Hill is holding cooking demonstrations for groups of up to 12 in its kitchens, which it is keen to expand to schools.

Owner Rashidul Haque, 49, better known as Biplob, said: “A lot of people want to know what goes into their food and what they are eating.”

The demonstrations began around nine months ago and guests have the opportunity to see their favourite dishes and starters made, to get hands on and to tuck in afterwards.

They are sent home with recipes and knowledge of how the ingredients and recipes work.
Chef and hospitality consultant Matt Hedges has been working with Madhuwan.

Matt said: “One group came with the parents and two teenage sons and then went home and cooked the meal together as a family.

“It was something they could all get involved in and were all interested in.”

As well as learning about how the food is made, the demos give an insight into how the kitchen works, including the 400-degree tandoor which is sweltering to work near.

Biplob, who has been in the industry for 23 years, said: “When you come in for a meal and order your food, you want it immediately, but it is just not possible.

“When you serve your food freshly cooked, you need the time.”

Matt and Biplob are particularly keen to expand the demonstrations to primary schools for free, having already had great feedback from youngsters who have come along.

They believe it is also important to give the youngsters the knowledge of food, and also cultural lessons.
