SWEET-TOOTHED shoppers will be in heaven in Bromley this weekend with a batch of cake-based fun at Intu shopping centre.

Intu, formerly The Glades, is hosting Cake Off from Friday, June 14, through to Sunday, June 16.

The weekend includes tasters, cupcake decorating and demonstrations of Friday and recipe demonstrations by chef Paul Da Costa Greaves on Sunday.

The icing on the cake is a masterclass and book signing by maestro Mich Turner MBE, whose Little Venice Cake Company has made bespoke desserts for the likes of The Queen, Gordon Ramsay and Paul McCartney.

Mich will give tutorials on decorating three intricate cakes, the first of which will be a Great Gatsby Butterfly Cake.

She said: “I’m going to be taking a single tier cake and covering that flawlessly with rolled out fondant and then decorating it with a bold, striking design that it very Great Gatsby, very art deco with cut-out butterflies and strong colours of orange which I’m going to be painting on and then hand-piping to get a strong art deco effect.

“My second decoration is a chocolate and vanilla ombre cake – two tiers of vanilla cake stacked on top of one another the same size to make a really deep tier.

“Then I am making a Swiss meringue buttercream – one in chocolate and one in vanilla – and I’m going to mix them together to get four different shades and I’m going to start at the bottom of the cake with a really dark chocolate, hand-piped with roses around the outside with buttercream, and as I work up the cake the colours will be fading until we have vanilla on the top.

“It shows a very different way of decorating a cake using a Swiss meringue buttercream.

“My third demonstration is the chocolate cornucopia, which is a two-tier cake – a vanilla cake covered in chocolate fondant. I’m going to make hand-moulded roses, lilies and leaves and I’m going to do a big cascade on the top which I swirl down the side of the cake and finish on the cakeboard.

“Once I fix it into position I’m going to be guilding it with some gold lustre.”

Though Mich’s cakes are intricate and artistic, she said her step-by-step method with lots of tips make them achievable.

She said: “Anybody can do it. What tends to daunt people is they can make a cake and they don’t know how to cover it to get a really good finish.

“They have a real trepidation about doing anything directly on the cake, so a lot of what I’m going to be showing is how you can make things beforehand and, if you are happy with them, put them on the cake.

“Or if you are going to go straight onto the cake, to ensure that you are giving yourself the confidence to be able to approach the cake without fear or trepidation.

“I’m going to show how to put a message on a cake which takes out any of the ambiguity about spacing, writing and making a mistake.”

Cake Off is at Intu Bromley from Friday, June 14, until Sunday, June 16, with demonstrations at noon, 1.30pm and 3pm.
