Though the City of Light is its usual dazzling self in this sprawling yarn, Cedric Klapisch's drama fails to match it for sparkle. Romain Duris plays a dancer knocked off balance by news of a heart condition. His social worker sister (Juliette Binoche), busy looking after her own children and her cases, drops everything to be with him. Elsewhere, a professor falls for one of his students, an architect constructs a mid-life crisis of his own, and so on. Klapisch allows the jumble of tones and tales to rumble on for a long time to no clear purpose. Slowly, he pulls the strings connecting each character tighter, and the story of interlinked lives in the big city becomes more involving. The starry cast lends the lightweight material substance, with typically strong performances from Binoche and Duris, a young actor shaping up to be the new Depardieu.
