My Winnipeg (12A)
Star rating: ***
Dir: Guy Maddin
With: Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage
A CITY of sleepwalkers, a dream train, a body hidden under the rug, a graveyard full of horses' heads - Guy Maddin's cinematic love/hate letter to his home town is frequently bizarre and often brilliant. Imagine a flu dream mixed with post-op wooziness and oodles of surreal humour and you'll almost arrive at the wonder that is My Winnipeg. Darcy Fehr plays writer-director Maddin (The Saddest Music in the World) as he journeys through his childhood in a bid to leave his home town as far behind as possible. Though the city in question is Winnipeg, the feelings of regret and relief will be familiar to anyone who has struggled with leaving home and family. Shot in mono and graced with some strikingly beautiful images, Maddin's Under Milk Wood by way of David Lynch is unlike anything you'll see this year. It shouldn't work, but it does.
Glasgow Film Theatre and Cameo, Edinburgh, tomorrow until July 24.
