Summer Hours (12A)
Star rating: ***
Dir: Olivier Assayas
With: Juliette Binoche,
Jeremie Renier
OLIVER Assayas's stately drama, which received its premiere at the Edinburgh International Film
Festival, is as exquisitely assembled as the art and antiques which lie at its heart. Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and
Jeremie Renier are the siblings who stand to inherit family
treasures from their mother's home once she passes on. As the designer, the industrialist and the economics professor arrive to begin sorting out the estate, they find saying farewell to the past is more difficult than they imagined. Each has a life and plans of their own to be getting on with, yet the pull of their childhood home, and all that happened there, remains strong. Although the obsession with objets d'art in Assayas's
beautifully shot film, with the
provenance of each piece explained at length, makes the picture seem like a super-charged, super-French version of the Antiques Roadshow at times, the performances, from Binoche especially, are flawless.
