Sexy blockbuster movie Fifty Shades of Grey is whipping up a sales storm in Bexleyheath.
Ann Summers, in Broadway Shopping Centre, is reporting bumper trading over the last few weeks with hand cuffs, blindfolds and the Christian ‘Grey’ tie flying off the shelves.
Store Manager Aimee Savage said the double benefit of Valentine’s Day combined with the release of the long-awaited film was providing a massive boost, with sales leaping 10 per cent in February compared to the same month last year.
She said: “It seems like every other customer is mentioning it and what is great is that people are now picking up certain items without embarrassment and seem to feel more comfortable about talking to us about what they are buying.”
The movie – directed by Croydon-born Goldsmiths Graduate Sam Taylor-Johnson – was based on EL James’ kinky 100-million selling series of books and took £13.55 million in its opening weekend last month.
