Nevil Shute - Sidcup
Author Nevil Shute's career spanned 30 years and included 25 books.
Born in Ealing, Middlesex, Shute was educated at schools in Oxford, Shrewsbury, and Woolwich.
He went on to live in Hatherley Road, Sidcup, during the 1920s and worked at Vickers in Crayford.
Shute became an aeronautical engineer as well as a pilot, and was involved with the development of airships.
After founding a successful aircraft construction company, Shute resigned to concentrate solely on his writing.
His novels include A Town Like Alice, Trustee From The Toolroom, Pied Piper and On the Beach.
Shite settled in Australia in the 1950s and died in Melbourne in 1960.
