Frankie Howerd - Eltham
Comic actor Frankie Howerd, famous for his "titter ye not" catchphrase, was brought up in Eltham.
Born Francis Alex Howard in York, Howerd moved to South East London, where his father was a sergeant major in the Army.
Howerd made the most of his natural stammering and hesitation, and the characteristics eventually became his trademarks.
As well as appearing in two Carry On films, Howerd also starred as Lurcio the downtrodden slave in Up Pompeii. Three spin-off films followed, Up Pompeii, Up the Chastity Belt and Up the Front.
Howerd died in 1992.
