Matthew Jenkin looks ahead at this week’s TV schedules.

SO FAR, June is turning out to be a month of sad endings. As well as saying goodbye to the Glee club, we also see Clark Kent finally trying out the oh-so-sexy underpants over tights look, going from super boy to Superman in the final series of Smallville.

Everything which has a beginning has an end, and while Glee will definitely be returning for a third series, it will be the last time Freeview viewers will be able to watch the show on E4 after Sky won a bidding war with Channel 4.

Monday’s episode at 9pm is the finale Gleeks across the nation have all been waiting for and looks set to be a fitting farewell to the feel-good show which have made the first day of the week that little bit sunnier.

After weeks of rehearsals, fall-outs, more partner swapping than a teenage swingers’ party and despite Sue Sylvester’s wickedly funny attempts to sabotage the show choir, the students head to New York to compete in the nationals, and the pressure is on for them to organise their songs in time for the big day.

Meanwhile, Will tries to keep his decision to leave McKinley a secret and Finn makes an effort to win Rachel back.

It’s been a bumpy ride of highs and lows, pointless cameos and iffy song choices, which meant the second series never quite lived up to the promise of the first.

However, despite its freshness beginning to fade, it will be sorely missed on the free digital channel and I can’t help feeling we haven’t seen the best of this bright, breezy and unfairly derided musical yet.

I for one will be digging deep behind the back of the sofa tonight to afford the Sky subscription fee.

The beginning of the end also started with a bang yesterday in Smallville.

Viewers tuning into the show on E4 at 9pm for the first time will have been utterly bamboozled as it picked up where series nine ended.

A climactic battle with Zod saw Clark stabbed with a blue kryptonite dagger, which Lois has now managed to remove.

Just as well really because the last thing an intrepid reporter needs is the death of an alien with super powers on her conscience.

Tuesday’s episode sees Ms Lane depart for Egypt, where Carter Hall keeps a watchful eye on her.

Meanwhile, back in Metropolis the Daily Planet hires reporter Kat Grant to fill the vacant position, but she quickly attracts the attention of Deadshot, an assassin with a hidden agenda.

After 10 years of bending and moulding the Superman universe into something barely recognisable as Christopher Reeves’s big screen adventures, it will be interesting to see how the writers manage to tie all the loose ends and mind-bogglingly complicated storylines neatly up in a big blue and red super-bow.

Tom Welling may have been a bit of a wet weekend at times, but it’s been a helluva fun ride and I personally can’t wait to see him finally spin into his iconic costume.
