Spooky Story by Fay Gibson, aged 10

This was one of the shortlisted entries in the Halloween spooky story contest run by News Shopper and The Walnuts shopping centre in Orpington.

Holding his breath, he stopped in his tracks and slowly, carefully, turned his head.

But there was no one there. All that was possible to see in the pitch black road was some-one’s breath seep into the air.

Sam tried to shout but it came out as a squeak impossible even for a mouse to hear. Sam shivered with fright. Then it came to him whoever this someone was, he did not want to mess with them.

He suddenly felt the urge to run and run is what he did. After a long long time Sam could run no more so he took a short cut and there before him stood the old creepy dark towering mansion.

A little voice inside his head told him to open the door and step inside. Sam decided in the end that it was this or risk being killed. So he followed his instinct, but maybe that was a bad idea...

After several long moments he stepped inside, he listened intently. BANG!!! He thought he heard a door slam. He suddenly froze with terror. His teeth chattered with fear as he lifted his foot up to take a step but fell flat on his face with a loud thump.

He got up and he looked down at the floor and there before him was a trail of black shoe marks. Like a detective, he crawled along to uncover the rest of the trail. The trail stopped against a wall.

He found it mysteriously glowing. There were some carvings in the wall. He tried to feel it, and as he did it became clear that this was to be the biggest shock of his whole life. His face went white with fear as his hand had disappeared off the face of the earth.

Sam decided to step through the wall. He felt like all of his memories had left him. This feeling carried on for a few seconds before he felt the sensation that someone with a cold icy fist had reached out and grabbed his heart. He tried to put this feeling out of his mind and it finally stopped-after what seemed like several minutes later.

When Sam could finally open his chocolate brown eyes there before him was an eerie forest. In the distance Sam could see a tall witch - like figure wearing what looked like a black and green set of robes. He could hear something behind him and decided his best option was to run and hide.

A minute or two later all sorts of deformed goblin - like creatures started appearing. They had no eyes but they had very large ears. They had big teeth probably for biting people’s heads off!

Sam froze he could not move any part of his body, maybe that was a good thing though!

All Sam could see were these strange creatures running around and bumping into trees and running into each other. The strange creatures had very good hearing and for that reason they could catch food and yes they were very gruesome.

They had just eaten a rabbit which had rushed to its hole in the ground but was not fast enough to make it. Sam thought they were very capable of killing himself so he kept very still.

Then an idea came to him, he picked up a handful of stones and threw them high up into the air. The goblin like creatures went mad. Sam ran away. He shivered as he felt cold in his grey jogging bottoms.

Sam ran into a little pair of pixies. The pixies ran over to two paths and then one said to the other "one path will lead you to a horrible death and the other will lead you to safety which you will find further on in the forest”.

That was when Sam heard it again. Was it those deformed goblin like creatures again? Because it definitely sounded like them Sam thought. Sam did not know what to do. Maybe he should run and hide like last time, but then he thought they could have got wise to that trick. They were getting nearer by the minute and Sam's only option was to run and hide as he couldn’t decide which path to take.

As they came into sight the ringleader shouted "CREATURE CREATURE THIS PATH THIS PATH".

The goblin-like creatures ran down one random path. There was lots of screaming and shouting and then Sam heard one say "I AM TOO YOUNG TO DIE DIE".

Then Sam realized that it might be a clever idea to go down the opposing path.

Sam ran down the path. It wasn’t very appealing as it was an old dusty track laid out in the middle of nowhere but Sam thought it was better than dying so what was he complaining about?

The witch was now in sight and there was a foul smell in the air which was probably coming from the potion she was brewing. Sam did not know what to do. Maybe he should run nearer the witch or maybe that was a bad idea. Sam suddenly felt extremely cold from head to toe and then he felt like he was flying through the air hitting a tree on his way.

As he lay on the ground the witch appeared out of nowhere ''I knew you would be coming'' she screamed.

''I will now finish you off moawhahaha'' she shouted screaming even louder now.

''SAM SAM WAKE UP SAM, ITS ALL RIGHT DON'T WORRY'' and there before him were his friends.

On the way home his friends explained how they were chasing him for a joke and how he had hit his head and would not wake up. Sam just laughed and walked happily home.

What an interesting Halloween it had been!!
