One of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, The Pogues' Fairytale of New York featuring Croydon-born Kirsty MacColl, has turned 30 years old.

With its iconic lyrics “You scumbag, you maggot. You cheap lousy faggot. Happy Christmas your arse. I pray God it's our last”, the song was first released in 1987 and reached number two on the festive charts.

It was kept off Christmas number one by the Pet Shop Boys' cover version of Always on My Mind.

Despite remaining enduringly popular, and being the most-played Christmas song of the 21st century in the UK, it has still never reached the top of the charts.

The melancholic tale of a bickering couple on Christmas Eve constantly features on lists of the the best Christmas songs.

It was ranked at number 1 in the VH1 Christmas song chart three years running in 2004, 2005 and 2006, was named as Britain's "favourite Christmas song" by ITV in 2012.

Let’s remind ourselves of this festive classic.
